Academician Alexander Sergeev of the Russian Academy of Sciences told RBC that the Caucasian Mathematical Center at ASU has successfully attracted the country's leading mathematicians

The Caucasus Mathematical Center, based at Adyghe State University, has attracted leading mathematicians from around the country and has become a prominent platform for mathematics education in Russia. This opinion was expressed by Alexander Sergeev , Scientific Director of the National Center for Physics and Mathematics, in an interview with RBC TV Yug, while discussing the scientific and technical capabilities of the Southern and North Caucasian Federal Districts at the 2026 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). 

"Let me start with Maikop. This may be a bit of a surprise. Adyghe State University. It might seem like a small republic, but it's nonetheless the Caucasus Mathematical Center. <…> The Caucasus Mathematical Center has attracted some of our most brilliant mathematical minds from central Russia. Both the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the Steklov Institute consider it their training base. The fact that our best mathematical minds are constantly present there is an example of how a small republic can be organized in such a way that it becomes a base for mathematical education and technologies related to modern mathematics ," the academician said.

He particularly noted the contribution of Adygea State University Rector Daud Mamiya. According to the speaker, the university and the North Caucasus Mathematical Center have become the hallmark of mathematical science in the North Caucasus.

"The fact that everyone in the country knows about this center now... This is a very skillful positioning of North Caucasus science and North Caucasus education in such a way that central regions are drawn to it," Alexander Sergeev concluded.

The regional scientific and educational mathematical center of Adygea State University (ASU)—the "Caucasian Mathematical Center" (CMC ASU)—is focused on improving the level of research in mathematics and the quality of all levels of mathematics education in the Republic of Adygea and regions of southern Russia. The university received the right to establish the center in 2017 following a competitive selection process conducted by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

The Center's activities are carried out within the framework of the Concept for the Development of Mathematics Education in the Russian Federation, approved by a decree of the Government of the Russian Federation. The Center is part of a network of 11 regional scientific and educational mathematical centers (REMCs) and aims to create a unified educational environment that integrates the system of higher general and supplementary education with science across the entire educational trajectory: school, university, graduate school, and the first steps in a scientific career.
